Fingal Walking Way

Background

It has long been an objective of the Fingal Development Board to develop a way marked trail brand “The Fingal Way”. Fingal is ideally suited for walking with 88 km of coastline extending from Sutton in the South, to Balbriggan in the north. The Fingal Way Action Team was set up in April 2006 and charged with the task of making this vision a reality.

Team Membership:

Niall McGuirk (Fingal County Council, Sports Division)
Fergus O’Carroll (Fingal County Council, Parks Division)
Elaine O’Sullivan (Fingal Tourism)
Sam Johnston (Dublin Tourism)
Jeanne Deegan (Rural Dublin LEADER Co)
Valerie Henderson (Fingal Community & Voluntary Forum)
Willie Guerin (Independent Sport Representative )

Outcomes of 2006

• The team met five times in 2006.
• Preliminary work was carried out on identifying and marking existing walks along the Fingal coast including Howth Head.
• Fingal County Council with funding from Rural Dublin LEADER Co. under the Rural Tourism Measure started work on improving access to the Council owned High Amenity lands at the Rogerstown Inner Estuary in Donabate .The intention is to improve existing paths in the area and open up new trails.
• A digitised map of Howth Head Cliff Walk was prepared by the FDB. Fingal County Council plans to way mark the walk and to provide snippets of information en route on the varied ecology of the area as part of the Howth Special Area Amenity Order.
